Machining removes metal to make a part. Fabrication builds something out of metal pieces. Most real-world jobs need both, which is why Crawford Machine has done machining and metal fabrication under one roof in Titusville, PA since 1950.
What fabrication includes
Metal fabrication covers cutting, bending, forming, and welding raw stock (plate, bar, tube, angle, channel) into a finished assembly. A fabrication job might be a steel frame for a piece of equipment, a bracket that holds a motor in place, a guard, a skid, a hopper, or a one-off fixture that nobody sells off the shelf. We weld steel, stainless, and aluminum, and we machine the mating surfaces so everything bolts together square and true.
Why it matters
Off-the-shelf equipment rarely fits the job exactly. A fabricator closes that gap. When a pump needs a mount that does not exist, when a conveyor has to fit a building that was not designed for it, or when a piece of machinery needs a stronger version of a part that keeps breaking, custom fabrication is the answer. Good fabrication also means fewer failures: a properly designed weldment with the right material and the right weld prep will outlast something thrown together in a hurry.
Machining plus fabrication
The advantage of a shop that does both is that nothing gets handed off. We can fabricate a frame, then put it on the mill to bore the bearing holes in line. We can weld a repair onto a worn shaft, then turn it back to size on the lathe. One shop, one conversation, one accountable crew.
Who we fabricate for
Oil and gas operators, manufacturers, farms, contractors, and anyone in Crawford, Venango, and Warren counties who needs something built right. Many of our fabrication jobs started with a customer walking in with a broken piece and saying “can you make this better?”
